Runequest & Minecraft

The stereotypical default "adventure start" for D&D is, "You are all at an inn when...!"

The exact same starting default in Runequest is, "Your tribe declares this hill next to a river shall be their new home!"

Runequest is a much lower-level experience. Its iconic start is similar to another beloved game, where you start in the middle of nowhere and build, craft, and explore the world.

Runequest is a lot like Minecraft.

When you have D&D, you assume this pseudo-modern Renaissance setting, with the typical British castles, thee and thou, those Ren Fair theme park towns, bustling markets, tall ships, jousting, knights, princesses, comical bards, and every other trope across a thousand years of history jammed into one time period.

D&D is a game of stereotypes.

D&D is, by default, set in a time of plenty. If a town doesn't have it, traders will bring it in, and people will have enough money or resources to trade for whatever they want. Almost every D&D setting (outside of Dark Sun, but even that is a wealthy setting that does not worry about food) is like this. Trading routes have been long established. There is a vast "fat and wealthy" class. The towns and cities are enormous, and the borders between kingdoms are often drawn on well-established maps.

In Runequest, that starting scenario means your tribe is worried about the number of cows, oxen, sheep, chickens, and horses it has. People are building houses. People in your village go out in the hills and forests to forage. Others are tilling the land to plant crops. A few are building defenses. Some are making primitive tools and clothing.

You, the town's young adventurers, are called upon to go save someone who went missing, deal with raiders trying to steal your food or animals, explore the wilds looking for resources, and investigate ancient sites of mystery on your land. You help out where you can, but as your power grows, the town sees you as more important, being the problem solvers and people they call upon during a crisis.

Sound familiar? Yeah, that's Minecraft.

Oh, and by the way, you are likely crafting your own weapons, learning magic from things you find in those ancient sites, becoming more robust to deal with threats, and finding treasures lost by heroes of old in those ruins. As your town expands, the threats grow, and you begin working with surrounding settlements or fighting with them. You start to discover the secrets of the land and universe. Your power grows. You can craft better weapons and armor and enchant them.

That is all, um, Minecraft.

Runequest is Minecraft with a Bronze Age "mod" put on top of the game. Granted, this is a very simplistic way of describing the game and sort of unfair because it offers so much more, but it is far easier than describing it as "sort of like Conan and Ancient Greece, if you read the Odyssey, but not really that way." But when you look at how the lowest level of the world works, the day-to-day life of people is a lot like what you do in a Minecraft game.

Take care of the animals, till the fields, build houses, craft weapons and tools, build defenses, cut roads, explore, deal with dangers, threats, and hostile forces, learn magic, fish for food, hunt, trap, craft a bow and arrows, train, and explore ancient places of mystery.

This is your jam.

And that Runequest jam is Minecraft. Minus all the crazy builds, those are still possible if you play on longer arcs and open your mind a little. But the gameplay loop of the typical Runequest village start is surprisingly similar. You don't have iron, but you do have bronze as your "quality metal" and magic.

D&D is far too cosmopolitan and modernized, especially in its modern form. In Pathfinder 2, I get the feeling that Steampunk DoorDash is operating with spider mechs, delivering food from a magic Internet communication system, and the world is the Industrial Age. D&D has this "Age of Sail" feeling where worldwide trade brings commodities from distant lands to local markets. D&D is fat, wealthy, affluent, civilized, and with established governments and social norms. The towns are immaculate, built up, and look like tourist towns with dressed-up cosplay actors and many stereotypical Ren Faire things. Starships fly in from out of space. Gates connect the planes, and the outer planes are places everyone knows about. Gunpowder exists. Magical healing means no one gets sick. Parts are a parody of the fantasy genre, while others are so modern or sci-fi they don't belong in the game. D&D is more of a 1900s Victorian fantasy these days.

D&D and Pathfinder 2 are modern-day genre games that wear fantasy cosplay.

We are one step away from the designers of these games introducing cell phone magic items because characters can't be expected to not have those, and players won't know how to function in a pretend world without them.

Go ahead and laugh.

I will be right on this one day.

With Runequest, you are stripping away two whole technological ages. The Renaissance and Middle Ages have never happened, nor will they ever happen. You don't even have organized churches. Faiths are personal. Sea travel is hazardous, and with smaller boats, it is short-range. People need help to keep their animals cared for and in pens and must store food for longer winters. Tribes move into unsettled areas and try to settle them.

There is no iron or steel.

If you live in a small town, you won't have an "adventure shop" selling weapons, tools, torches, and armor. A smith will craft all these, and other tradespeople will craft essential gear like ropes and leather goods like packs. You won't have a wandering magic item merchant. Trade caravans exist, but only along major routes. There is no "industry" in this world. There are no "world-spanning governments" or "massive organized religions." People fight hard to scrape out survival.

You may even craft and sell your own goods. Get crafting skills, gather or buy resources, and tell your referee that your character will be crafting between adventures or during downtime.

You will be able to make quality gear and make coins on the side.

You add the technology level of D&D and all the trade, social, governmental, and world-spanning advancements with it. Once you have mass-produced iron, you will have an industry, universities, worldwide trade, exploration, colonization, a settled world with nations, and a powerful church. And you say high magic is added to this? That is an accelerant towards mass colonization and conquering the world.

The best model for relating Runequest to others is Minecraft. This is a survival game in which you need to craft your technology yourself out of the things you find. There is an "urban and social" part of Runequest that ignores the survival aspect, but 99% of the world is made up of these small towns and settlements fighting for survival in a hostile world.

Minecraft Season #2 Thoughts

Between Two Worlds

A lot of work done, need to flesh out the towers and the throne room though.

After a time playing the game visiting other servers and such. I have come up for an idea for season 2 of our Minecraft server. There is an interesting assortment of plugins for Minecraft to make the game more roleplay focused I would love to have. Currently the game is caught between versions of 1.6.4 vs 1.7.2. In the newest version has a lot of features I really like, such as the new biomes (different terrain types within the game's world), and new plants and such.

My thinking is to develop a 1.6.4 server setup with the cool MMO and roleplay mods the give the game classes, crafting jobs, player-owned plots and such. Even the older vesion has less cool stuff than the new version, the 1.6.4 version had a lot more support for tweaking the game to the things, as a roleplayer-centric person I am, wants.

So season #2 will start in a couple months after I see what exact package of plugins I want to try, the old Season 1 world will be archived so no one will lose anything as we try the new setup.

I did learn the backbone of the plugins, called Bukkit Mod is a long way off from being updated to the 1.7.2 codebase along with the delay of updating the plugin makers have to do.

The question would be then, wait for the update to happen, which could take a while? Or try a new setup?

If there is anything you would like to see, please share!

Minecraft Season #1 Update 2

This old Castle, and Great Railway to Adventure

I have been experimenting with a monorail system.
Well, well, we find ourselves making progress in bite-sized chunks!  But this is the fun thing about Minecraft, it's a huge sandbox and you play at your own pace doing various project to civilize your own little world. We have shifted from surviving to actually building out our base.

We added a new, bigger garden to make growing lot of crops easier. A lot easier than the old courtyard as seen in previous episodes.
Viola! The new victory gah'den with ample space. I found a cart too! Yay, we are going to add a pig farm.

Looks stunning at night, no?

Waterfall for a zen-like dramatic effect.
Double-sized cow ranch and slimes too.

Hak has been doing gangbusters on the castle rebuild, we are expanding the foundation by 1.5 times and switching to grey stone bricks.

Here I am helping Hak with the foundation work.

The space underneath will be used to fluff out the basement.

The addition expands around back too.
One thing we have found is that in Minecraft once you start settling in to your own home town you start branching out to other areas in search of biomes for raw resources. The plan is to build satellite stations or base camps where we can use as a base to find dungeons and NPC villages. I have an idea to build a powered rail tramway between the hub so we can cross great distances with just a little fuss. It requires a TON of iron for all the railwork, but is very fun when you are done.
Down on the south edge is what looks like jungle so we will build a station on the extreme south edge.

To the north-east is a huge mountain area, and I have see some obsidian laced valleys, so I plan on making a base out there.
The monorail is in its beginning stages and the powered rails make the trip speedy and automatic.
I tired to light it up dramatically.

It goes for miles.

The beginning needs a proper station.

This one goes to the north, and ends up in horse country.

The castle proper is getting expanded. Hak has a dream for a nice place.

Getting there!

Needs better frontage, and a rail station.

Since we have established roads...HAK TOOK DOWN MY (fugly) NAV-TOWER!

Need bigger throne room. Yep.

The view from the back guest rooms. Fabulous!

You are moire than welcome to log into it and help our or even build your own addition, heck even running an exploration hub would be fun!

Oh Hak's puppy is fine!

Dawg needs a name.
WAVE HI HAK!
A bonus treat :) We are enrolled in the Everquest Next beta! When NDA permits, we will issue reports to our followers. It's a Minecraft style game as well, so I can't wait to see what you can do there too!

Rock on!

Minecraft Season #1 Update

Minecraft Report: Fish Pond, Chicken Machine, Horses and Fun Stuff

We had a friend Keegan log in to our server and he quickly criticized our muddy old fishing trough, a small little strip of water in the garden we would fish up dinner from, so he went about making the castle a proper replacement:

Ye Olde Muddy Peasant Fishing Hole

Ye new exquisite royal fishing POND! Thanks Keegan!
It has awesome overhanging trees, a nice and deep, a waterfall, a secret, and a couple lily pads. A wonderful addition to the scene.

Another thing he added was a chicken machine. A way to auto farm eggs (kind like those chicken farms where the stock sits in a cage and a hopper collects the eggs, I prefer free range chickens, but we need eggs!):

Chickens are penned up here.

Eggs get collected here.
Hak got a puppy!

Need a good name for the dog.

I had a saddle I got fishing, so I gave to 'cowboy' Keegan so he could round himself up a fine horse he will name Chestnut:

I will love him and feed him and name him CHESTNUT.

Keegan added a water pit to our spiral staircase of doom so I would stop killing myself falling. IT'S A 500 MPH YOLO DROP!

Hold to your lunch.

Also our deep core mining tunnels produced a load of redstone and a small pile of diamonds. Our goal is to get to the first bedrock layer where the good stuff is and get some TNT to do some controlled blasting. Eventually we are going to build a large mining chamber with a lattice of sub tunnels like in the James Bond movie 'A View to a Kill'. Notice my awesome super-claustrophobic mining shafts! Built like a Boss!

Deep Core Mining Hub 0001 Sub-Level A. Grab a pulse rifle...

Ya these go on for miles...we can't get lost...

It's fun to see people add things to the castle and see what creative ideas they add to the sandbox! My next task is to create a yard for the chickens and an external veggie farm, and an outhouse. Hak has his job cut out for him enlarging and fixing up the castle.

HAK! We got a CAVERN under the CASTLE!

All in all a fun game to share with bro's and I hope to see what other visitors can add to the place.

The Early Days of Season #1 (dang fugly navigation  post - lol)

You are more than welcome to join in and help out!

Minecraft Update Season #1

Stained Glass and Chicken Bomb

Another day in season 1 world where we get some more done on our home castle. So far its shaping up.

Pumpkin Head....cha..cha..cha...*draws knife*....
On week one of our server, mighty Keegan of "Minecrafter's Home Glass LLC of Las Vegas" bestowed upon us stained glass...and it was good.
Not just good! Super awesome! And it comes with a lifetime replacement warranty!
Keegan also built a portal.

 We went through.

Black Rock Depths for you WoW  players...even has orcs. I want to build a castle here! Keegan said it was too dangerous, I DON'T BELIEVE HIM! It looked perfectly safe...

YA PERFECTLY SAFE!

Here is the newer Deep Core hub, we are going to redo it too look like Stargate: SG1 so it's a work in progress:

Remember the chicken machine? Since a Creeper attack nearly destroyed it, Hak built a bunker around it. The fun part is that the big crate is 1/3 full of eggs now, in a day...I wonder if it will explode...

The newer back throne room Hak was working on is nearly done!

Gorgeous but it needs to be Stormwind big.

The Nav-Pole is still there, and I need to get an external farm going for my garden and make a place to park horses here:

CASTLE GUTS, much improved, bigger so we can partition into player rooms:

HAK's puppy...awww....he's lonely...
KEEGAN's stuff! No touch!
Deep Core has reached the bedrock, now to find a way deeper to Deeper Core mine...the search continues...

Who knew trees grew underground?!

Overall though season #1 is turning out fun, we have yet to go out and explore the world too!
Dang fugly nav pole...
