Here is a quick tip for creating most any Palladium character, and this works really well for characters with skill packages. This ONLY works if you have the PDF version.
If you have a list of skills to choose from, copy them into MS Word and delete the skills you do not choose. If you have a skill package that gives you a number of skills, copy the entire list into MS Word.
Do not worry about duplicate skill picks that may happen!
Next, using MS Word's sort feature in "Home" sort the list alphabetically:
After that, you will have all of your character's skills, and you can start eliminating the duplicates and keeping the ones with the highest percentage.
And you are done! What used to take an hour or more of writing, sorting, finding duplicates, and working the list of skills out is now done in one quick step. If you are playing with a group, everyone will have a sorted list, and one person can have the book and go down one character's list and announce the skill percentage.
Climbing? 50% plus 8% per level!
Then everyone with the climbing skill fills that in and the player moves on to the next skill. When that player is done with all their skills, the next player finds any missing from their sheet, and you go down that smaller list one at a time until done. You repeat until everyone is done with skill percentages and ability modifications.
The trick is to save time by having every character with the same skill done ONCE at the same time. If skills are missed, they get done when the next player gets to call out their missing ones, and people who need them do those at the same time too.
And since different characters will have different percentage modifiers, they do the math at the same time, and you get through character creation much faster. And since only one person is referencing the book and calling out the skills, you are not passing a book around and wasting time.
