Yes! Finally, someone doing something about all the waste in the hobby.
The book is being printed on paper certified as sustainable with non-toxic vegetable-based inks. Some people won't care, but it is something publishers can do better - and customers can do better by demanding change. This is a significant step forward if the quality is just as good - that is something I worry about, but I am sure that was considered too.
Now, we could only get Wizards and Paizo to stop filling books with so much filler and make the same commitments. I would love 5E to be a tighter, more straightforward game that takes up less space and weight. As it is now, they use a publishing model that requires thousands of tons of books to be shipped around the world for game editions that will eventually be replaced. It is a wasteful consumerist publishing model that people ignore and needs to change.
5E Core should be a 64-page book, just like B/X - and a complete game.
The waste - in both end-user and production - for the D&D game is something Wizards should be working on improving. They can say all the progressive things in those books as they want, but if sending the message destroys the environment, I wonder if this is just about the money and the words on those pages mean nothing.
I have experience inside a print shop, and I know how toxic those inks can be and how sustainable paper choice matters. Multiply that by the millions of books Wizards ships a year, and you have a significant issue that should be given more attention. The market leader must be the most responsible and set the bar high.
We can have favorite games, but we can also demand better from those that make them.
Goodman Games, thank you for being the first.
