Mutant RPGs

So I was contrasting these two games the other day when I was talking about Gamma World style games, and there are two more to talk about now. I may be late to this party, but it is great to see these two (with the exception of 2nd edition, which is MIA) out and about:

Wow, welcome back, it has been a while. Of all the modern ones, Mutant Future is the most "like first edition" in this bunch. The Gamma World 3rd edition is kind of a strange outlier, sort of a mix of B/X with the original Marvel Superheros color action chart sort of thing going on, as well as a LOT of fantasy themed influences not present in the Gamma World 1e game.

It is just great to be able to get printed copies again and see people enjoy these. What a happy day to see some old friends back. Now if only Gangbusters and the original Top Secret would show up to the party we could relive the early 1980's with style.

And as a postscript, the more AD&D 2nd Edition Gamma World 4 is here too. This one I never got into, but it is an interesting mention when you are talking old-school, even though it is a product of the 90s and it feels a little heavier. The game also overuses abbreviations to the point of creating a new assembly programming language: MD, THAC, CH, PS, DX, CN, RU, MP, DM, AC...what is wrong with you 1990s??? And here I thought the "Use Artifacts" diagram where you could kill yourself trying to figure out a toaster was just used for things in the game.
