Add one more thing to the list of things that could kill D&D. Mearls was central to putting the team that built 5E together (and salvaging the 4E mess), and he is a game designer on the level of a Monte Cook.
And Wizards fired multiple high-profile D&D names. Artists, editors, designers - everyone you need to start a core team.
This is your next Paizo.
This is the next "group of high profile creators with built-in fans" they did wrong.
This guy could announce a Kickstarter for a fantasy game, instantly pull in millions - not just one but many multiple - and turn his name and street cred into a major game company. This project would pull in the original creators of 5E, some of the great talent still at Wizards and waiting to leave, and the original 5E fans.
I would back it without knowing if this game will ever exist or what it is.
I'm in.
